Oxford St, Paddington is my favourite area of Sydney to shop and browse. This stretch of road is the location where all the local Australian designer magic happens and is the home to some of my favourite labels.
Bianca Spender would have to be right at the top of the list. If you like chic and simple, yet striking designs, then you’ll love her too. Zimmerman is a must for swimwear and your beach babe look. Manning Cartell offers the modern trendy woman a solid uniform and Papinelle have your country-style cotton comforts. Oxford St also accommodates quintessential high end Aussie brands like Scanlan & Theodore, Sass & Bide, Camilla & Marc, Alice McCall, Charlie Brown and Ellery. All of which are celebrity favourites.
TIP for out-of-towners – retail shops in Australia operate from 9am-5pm. Yep they trade during office hours, so don’t expect to shop like you do in Asia by night.
When you say vintage to a Sydney-sider, their immediate thought is probably Crown St, Surry Hills. They would be right as there is a huge variety of vintage store there including Grandma Takes A Trip, Zoo Emporium, C’s Flashback to name but a few. However, the one shop that has provided me with endless joy over the years (and outfits) has been Broadway Betty on Parramatta Rd near Glebe. The best vintage pieces I have ever purchased came from this store. Good finds include scarves, bags, shoes, dresses and more. On this occasion I walked away with Sachi booties in mint condition and pre-loved white Guess overalls (you’ll see these in upcoming posts). While you are at Broadway Betty, check out thrift outlet Salvos just a few doors down. Helping charity and shopping? Perfect combo!
